Joyce Hess, 79, of East Moline died December 13, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus.
Funeral services will be 1p.m. Monday, December 18, 2006 at Christ United Methodist Church (3801-7th St.East Moline). Visitation will be 4:30-7:00 p.m. Sunday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to Salvation Army.
Joyce was born May 7, 1927 in Joliet, IL to Thomas and Beatrice (Young) Fergusson.
She married Ray Vernon Hess on November 6, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on June 9, 2001.
Joyce attended Joliet Township High School and worked in the Navy Depot yards in Joliet during WWII. She and her husband, Ray, owned and operated Hess IGA in Elwood, IL in the 1950's where she was elected and served as Jackson Township Secretary in the 1960's. Moved to El Centro, CA in 1965 and became a registered nurse in 1968 continuing that profession until the 1980'S. She and Ray retired to Lake Elsinore, CA and enjoyed many wonderful years. They moved to East Moline, IL in 1993.
She loved and enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her other interests included cooking, baking, candy making, various needle crafts, and her cherished storytelling of the family's history.
