"Kay" Mary Catherine Vogel

Mary Catherine 'Kay" Vogel, age 85, formerly of Moline, IL, died Friday, August 23, 2013 at Lighthouse at Silvis, Silvis, IL.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3205- 60th Street, Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2013, with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Entombment will be at Calvary Mausoleum in Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to River Bend Foodbank.

Kay was born August 20, 1928 in Champaign, IL, the daughter of Peter Arthur and Mary Helen (Guinan) Dempsey. She married Barth "Bud" Joseph Vogel on June 28, 1948 in Champaign, IL. He preceded her in death on March 21, 2013.

Kay was a secretary to Mrs. Charles Deere Wiman and later was the first Director of the Deere Wiman House. She was also a newspaper columnist known as "The Grammar Cop." Kay was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. Currently she was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Kay was a Bethany Home Board member; Catholic Charities Board member; Friends of the Moline Public Library Board member; Mary Hillouse Circle of King's Daughters member, past President and Treasurer; Sacred Heart House of Prayer Board member and past President; St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society member, Secretary and Publicity Coordinator; St. Mary's Food Pantry volunteer; St. Mary's Parish Lector; and Peoria Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Volunteer of the Year.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, foster daughter Janis Mell and brother Gerald Dempsey.

Kay's family would like to thank the staff of Betty's Harbor at Lighthouse at Silvis and the staff at Passages Hospice for the compassion and care they gave to Kay.
