K. Virgil Peterson, age 89 of Orion died February 9, 2005 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion on Monday, February 14th, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 on Sunday at Kirk,Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home in Orion. Burial will be in Western Township Cemetery, Orion. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion or the Association of Retarded Citizens of Rock Island County.
Virgil was born on September 10, 1915 in Lynn Center, IL the son of Martin and Naomi Anderson Peterson. He married Irma Nelson in Knoxville, IL on December 7, 1952. She preceded him in death on January 13, 2003.
Virgil farmed in Lynn Center and later rural Orion for many years. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion for over 45 years, serving as an usher and board member. Virgil was also a member of the Two by Twos of the Church. He was a former member of Swedona Lutheran Church, serving as treasurer of the Luther League, and also serving as an usher and board member. He worked as a volunteer driver for the Orion Senior Citizens for 15 years after he retired from farming. In recent years, he enjoyed his membership and was very active with the Orion Senior Citizens. He was a member of the Orion Card Club for many years. In 1953, he served as the "Corn King" of the Midwest Orion Corn Fall Festival. He spent many hours growing and selecting just the right ears to display and felt greatly honored to be selected for this title. His trophy is still on display in his home.
Survivors include 2 daughters and their spouses, Virgilee and Troy Reed of Wheaton, IL and Janice and Karl Gustafson of Bridgeport, West Virginia; a son Douglas Peterson of Moline; 5 grandchildren - Derek Allen Reed, Kendra Ann Reed, Breanna Louise Gustafson, Dana Lynn Gustafson, and Sarah Marie Gustafson; one brother and spouse Carl and Alice Peterson of East Peoria, IL. and a cousin Helen Bogard of Galesburg, IL
He was preceded in death by his brother LaVerne Peterson on February 15, 1992.
