Kenneth L. Hanger, age 65, of Moline, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Trinity, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Homewood Evangelical Free Church, 3303-60th Street, Moline. Visitation is Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Burial is at Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the church or the American Cancer Society.
Ken was born August 7, 1946 in Triplett, MO, the son of Raymond and Esther Triplett Hanger. He married Julie Thorngren on June 8, 1973 at First Congregational Church in Moline.
Ken was employed by the Moline Police Department for 37 ½ years; he began his career as a Patrolman and soon became an Investigator in the Traffic Division. He later became Patrol Sergeant then Patrol Lieutenant. Ken then served as Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division for 16 years, retiring in 2005. Over the course of Ken's career he was asked several times to serve the community as the interim Police Chief. Ken was currently employed with the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department as a Bailiff at the Rock Island County Court House.
He was a 1964 graduate of Moline High School, a graduate of Black Hawk College, and received his bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose University in 1977. Ken was a USMC reserves veteran. He was a member of Homewood Evangelical Free Church, and the Fraternal Order of Police. Ken enjoyed traveling the world with his wife; especially their vacations in Savannah, GA and North Carolina. He also enjoyed photography, especially using nature and eagles as his subjects, biking with his son, running and jogging.
