Kenneth L. Sommers, 90, of Moline, died Friday, January 1, 2010, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at Salem Lutheran Church, Moline. Visitation will be from 3:30 - 7:00 p.m. Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church or American Parkinson Disease Association.
Ken was born April 19, 1919 in Moline, the son of John A. and Ida L. (Cherry) Sommers. He married Ruth Sparling on July 26, 1941 in Moline. She preceded him in death on November 1, 2005.
Ken was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the Phillipine Islands. He was the billing department manager at John Deere Plow Company for 44 years, retiring on February 1, 1982. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church where he was a Sunday school teacher, trustee and deacon, Ken also sat on the Illinois Board of Directors at the YMCA and the District Governor of the International Y's Men Club. He was a member of the VFW post #2163.
Survivors: Daughters Ann Lindahl (Stanley) of DeKalb, IL, Karen Sommers of Moline; Sons Reed Sommers (Julie) of Port Byron, IL, Craig Sommers (Diane) of Moline; 7 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, parents, a sister, Nellie Roels, a brother, Chester and an infant son.
