Larry Nickerson

Lawrence W. “Larry” Nickerson, 73, of Moline, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 20, 2019, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline.  Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., with a rosary to be recited at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at the funeral home.  Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery, where military honors by the V.V.A.  Memorials may be made to the family.

Larry was born on June 13, 1945, in Geneseo, IL, the son of Clifford and Velma (DePauw) Nickerson.  He married Renea D. Thoeming on November 24, 1973, in Rapids City.  She preceded him in death in June of 2013.  He was previously employed in the perpetual inventory department at John Deere Harvester Works,  retiring after 35 years.

Larry served in the U.S. Army with the 25th Infantry during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967 and was a member of the American Legion Post #246.   His faith was very important to him and he belonged to Christ the King Catholic Church in Moline and also St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie.  He loved attending classic car shows with his 65’ T-Bird and 66’ Corvette Stingray and enjoyed decorating the house with Christmas lights.  He was known as “Handlebar Nick”, and he won two Shave for the Brave mustache competitions.

Survivors include his children, Brandon, East Moline, Beau, Moline, and Brianne, Moline; grandchildren, Quentin, Mason, Andrew, and Hunter; siblings, Elaine (Gene) Bouwens, Geneseo, Arlene Maynard, Milan, and Roger (Kim) Nickerson, Albany; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry’s children would like to thank the numerous family and friends who showed their love and support and also a special thanks to the VA and Genesis Hospice Team.
