Larry W. Peterson, 70, of Orion, IL, died Thursday, December 15, 2016, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1001 9th Street, Orion, IL. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2016, in the Arc of St. Paul. Burial will be at the National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by the Sherman J. Sagadin V.F.W. Post 143 and also the Orion American Legion Post 255. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to the Sherman J. Sagadin V.F.W. Post 143 in Orion. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Larry was born on October 18, 1946, in Galesburg, IL, the son of Glenn C. and Ruth E. Gustafson Peterson. He married Cheryl Griffith on June 15, 1969, in Seaton, IL. At the age of 18, Larry worked for JI Case in Bettendorf. He then joined the United States Army from 1966-1969, serving in Vietnam. Following his return home, Larry returned to work at JI Case in Bettendorf and in 1985 was transferred to Wausau, WI. For 2 years he then worked for Case IH in East Moline, from where he retired in 1998. He worked for a year in the office at Quality Repair in Colona. Later, Larry worked on contract for Case Corp in Mt. Joy, finally retiring in 2014.
Larry was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion. Also, he was a member of the Orion American Legion Post 255, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Sherman J. Sagadin V.F.W. Post 143 in Orion, where he served for 2 years as Commander. He was the president of Davenport Family Readiness Group in the Iowa Army National Guard from 2003 to 2013. Larry was honored 2 times with receiving Family of the Year from the state of Iowa National Guard.
Larry enjoyed working outdoors. Above all, he treasured his time with his grandchildren and family, especially farming with his son, Brad.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Peterson; sons, Bradley (Amber) Peterson and Scott (Kelly) Peterson, all of Orion, IL; grandchildren, Kody, Brady, Blake, Allyssa, Bryan, and Boyd; 2 sisters, Nancy (Dick) Rossi, Orion, IL, and Gloria (Terry) Waldbusser, Coal Valley, IL; 2 brothers, Wendell (Helen) Peterson, Davenport, IA, and Ronald (Martha) Peterson, Bettendorf, IA; many nieces, nephews, and great nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
