Leland K. Nomura, 72, of Rock Island died Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Trinity Rock Island surrounded by loved ones.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2010 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601-38 Avenue, Moline. Per his wishes cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be made to your favorite charity in Leland's name.
Leland was born August 7, 1938 in Los Angeles, CA. At age 3, he and his family were relocated to Poston War Interment Camp in Arizona for four years. He also served in the U.S. Army.
In 1985, he chose the Quad Cities to fulfill his vision of starting a business. Nomura Enterprises, Inc. (NEI) was founded and remained in the Quad Cities the next 20 years. It went from 10 to 250 employees in five states. He was named Illinois Minority Small Business Person of the Year in 1993 and credited his staff for the honor.
Leland was a community leader and a proud Rock Island citizen. He participated in community efforts including Project Now, and NEI partnered with Grant Wood Elementary in Rock Island to mentor the children. He was an extremely generous, loyal and wise man who enjoyed fishing, travel, time with friends and family.
Leland is survived by his wife of 36 years LoRee Nomura of Pine Grove, CA; his son Vincent (Holly) Nomura of Bettendof, IA; step-children Kim (Manuel) Gianandrea of Pine Grove, CA; Craig Rousseau of Pine Grove, and Teri (Mike) Ornellas of Pine Grove. Siblings Gerald (Henrietta) Nomura of Thousand Oaks, CA, Dale Nomura of Montebello, CA and Christine (Jim) D'Ottavio of Sebastopol, CA. Grandchildren to carry on his memory include: Miles and Charles Nomura; Michelle, Paisley and Cassidy Ornellas, and Justin Robello.
