Leonard Swanson, 86, of Rock Island, died December 2, 2008 in Moline.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2008 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Military Honors will be conducted by the VVA Honor Guard Chapter 299. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island or a charity of your choice.
Leonard was born January 10, 1922 in Rock Island, son of Gust and Hulda E. (Viberg) Swanson, immigrants from Sweden. He attended Rock Island schools and graduated in January 1940 from Rock Island High School. Leonard began his 43 year insurance career at Bituminous Casualty Corp., Rock Island in 1940 but was called to WWII in November of 1942. As a staff sergeant with the US Army 15th Machine Records Unit, he served in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan until January 1946. He married Helen Kittilsen on August 15, 1947 at First Baptist Church in Rock Island.
At Bituminous Insurance Companies, Leonard was an accountant, Comptroller, VP, director and Sr. VP. He retired in 1984 to pursue his passion for walleye fishing. An avid fisherman and boater throughout his life, Leonard enjoyed teaching his three sons, his grandchildren and his wife the finer points of each. He also enjoyed gardening and playing his accordion.
He is survived by his wife Helen, sons Donald (Sandy) of Rock Island and David (Anne) of Longview, WA, five grandchildren Matthew, Heather, Hannah, Brandon and Nicole, seven nieces, two nephews, sisters in law Dorothy Wildman and Ruth Swanson and several cousins in Sweden. He was preceded in death by his parents, his youngest son John, and two brothers Emil and Harold.
