Lorretta M. Stille, 95, of Moline, IL, died Thursday, July 12, 2012 at her home.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012 at Riverside United Methodist Church, 712 16th Street, Moline. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Riverside United Methodist Church Children's Library or to Trinity Pathway Hospice.
Lorretta was born on January 3, 1917 in Charles City, IA the daughter of Lester and Hannah (Uetz) Bennett. Prior to marriage she earned a teaching certificate and taught in a one room school in northeast Iowa. She married Robert C. Stille on June 20, 1941 at Central Methodist Church, Charles City, Iowa. Together they raised five children and were blessed with 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Family was a very important part of their lives and she was the cornerstone of the family. Robert preceded her in death on March 29, 2007. Lorretta was an active member of Riverside United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years. In addition, she taught Vacation Bible School, was SS Elementary Department Head, and was in charge of the children's library where she ran reading programs each year. She became involved with tutoring neighborhood children at the church which then led to her developing an after school tutoring program for the Hispanic United Methodist Church, Rock Island. Working with children for all these years was the highlight of her life and inspiring children to read was her passion.
For her work with the tutoring program she was recognized by the Key Women Educators of Beta Epsilon and the Bi State Literacy Program. She was awarded life membership for her work in the PTA. She was a member of United Methodist Women's Society. Having a flower garden and fresh flowers were very comforting to her and she eagerly looked forward to family visits and get-togethers.
