Margaret F. VanHoorebeck, age 95, formerly of Rock Island, died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Avonlea Cottage, Milan.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. Visitation is from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. on Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church Building Fund or Fr. Flanigan's Boy's Town, Omaha, NE.
Margaret was born September 2, 1912 in Rock Island, the youngest child of Modest J. and Octavie (Moyaert) DeWulf. She married Henry E. VanHoorebeck on May 10, 1944 in the Chapel of the U.S. Naval Hospital, Oakland, CA. At the time he was serving on active duty with the Navy and stationed at this hospital. Mr. VanHoorebeck passed away on November 3, 1991.
Margaret attended local schools, graduating from Rock Island High School, Class of 1931, whereupon she completed a course in bookkeeping, stenography and clerical duties at Rock Island Business College.
Margaret was employed for many years by Drs. Joseph and Edward B. de Silva as receptionist and bookkeeper. At the outbreak of World War II, she was appointed to the position of assistant clerk to Rock Island County Board No. 1, Selective Service System located in Moline. While residing in California, she worked as private secretary to the Disbursing Officer at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Oakland. On her return to Rock Island she was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal (depot). She resigned from the Arsenal (U.S. Army Weapons Command) on May 14, 1965. She was an Inventory Control Specialist at the time of her resignation.
Margaret was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Beta Alumni Chapter Tau Delta Nu Society, Cordial Club and Rock Island Arsenal Women's Fifteen Year Club.
Margaret enjoyed her home, her friends, and her family. She also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and television.
Survivors include: a brother-in-law and sister-in-law William and Leonora VanHoorebeck, Taylor Ridge; three nephews, Marvin Belshause, Orion; Kirk VanHoorebeck, Davenport; and Greg VanHoorebeck, Davenport.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry; sister, Alice Belshause; and younger brother, Charles.
