A funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Moline at 10 AM on Friday, July 18, 2008. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 PM to 7 PM at Esterdahl Mortuary and Crematory, Ltd., 6601-38th Avenue, Moline, with a rosary to be recited at 3:30 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memorial Estate. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She was born in Chicago to Nicholas Orlando and Anne Nuccio Orlando on April 20, 1926. She attended schools in Chicago and graduated from Von Steuben High School. She married Richard H. Heald on July 12, 1947, and moved with him to Moline. She enjoyed working the Christmas rush at the post office, but her real joy in life beyond her family was her work as school secretary at Maple Grove and Roosevelt schools in Moline. She loved both staff and students as a second family. She and her husband, Dick, were longtime Moline basketball fans, holding season tickets for years. They spent many enjoyable days of retirement in Bagley, Wisconsin, where she learned to enjoy fishing before Dick's death. She also enjoyed traveling with her friends, attending productions at Prospect Park, and playing cards with friends and neighbors, rotating homes until it became too difficult for her to get around. Being a true Chicago girl, she loved her Cubs to the end and frequently gave them advice and helpful encouragement which was shouted at the TV. It would only be fitting for the Cubs to win this year.
She is survived by her children are Michael (Mary Goodman) Heald of Madison, Wisconsin, Alan Heald of Moline, Nancy Stephens of Kankakee, Carol Heald (Joe Alejo) of Moline, Richard "Rick" (Keri) Heald of Taylor Ridge. Her step-sisters, Emma (Roger) Berg, and Lena (Thomas) Kozimor, both of Arlington Heights. Another great joy in her life was her grandchildren, Anne Heald, Megan Westrum, Andrew Stephens, Zachary Stephens, Benjamin Stephens, Alexandria Heald-Alejo, Blake Heald and great-grandchildren, Ellen and Anna Stephens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and an infant sister.
