Marion S. Kidd, formerly of Moline, Illinois, died at home in Milan, Illinois, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law on Saturday, March 26, 2005 after a ten-plus-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time of her death. A service will be held at the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island on Friday, April 1, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend should meet at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601 - 38th Avenue, Moline at 12:15 p.m. to process over to the cemetery. There will also be a social gathering held for family and friends to remember Marion at Veranda Restaurant, Rock Island on Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Niabi Zoological Society in Coal Valley, Illinois or to the First Congregational Church of Moline, Illinois.
The former Marion Carol Schroeder was born to Anna and Edward Schroeder on July 4, 1922 in Oak Park, Illinois. Marion lost her father to cancer when she was 10 years of age, and she and her mother moved to the Quad City area to be closer to family. Marion attended John Deere Junior High and graduated from Moline High School in 1940 and from the Moline Public Hospital School of Nursing in 1943 as a Registered Nurse. She also attended Augustana College later in her life where she studied art.
From August of 1944 to February of 1946, Marion served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp. She worked in the medical surgical wards of station and general hospitals in the United States for four and one-half months and then for twelve months at the 374th General Hospital on Tinian Island in the Mariana Islands in the South Pacific from January of 1945 to December of 1945. She helped to set up the General Hospital, taught and supervised corpsman, and cared for patients.
After leaving the Army Nurse Corp, Marion returned to civilian life to work as an office nurse for many years. She also worked at Moline Public Hospital in the emergency room, Americana Nursing Home, now known at Heartland Health Care Center, and for the Visiting Nursing Association of Rock Island County from which she retired in 1978 due to a disability following knee surgery. Many nursing students from the Quad City area gained clinical experience while accompanying Marion as she cared for her patients as a visiting nurse.
After the war, Marion met and married William C. Kidd of Moline, Illinois, on December 1, 1946 at the First Congregational Church of Moline. Mr. Kidd was also a graduate of Moline High School. had attended the University of Illinois, and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the South Pacific aboard the destroyer the U.S.S. Kilty. Marion and Bill built their own home in Moline in the 1950s. In 1956, their daughter, Shavaun Mara Kidd, was born. Mr. Kidd preceded his wife in death on November 22, 1988 after an extended illness following a stroke in 1974. Marion cared for her husband at home during that time.
Marion was very active throughout her life. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Moline and the Trinity Alumnae Association and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Moline and the Moline Rainbow Girls Mothers' Club. Marion and her husband, Bill, belonged to Terpsichorean Dance Club for ten years. She taught Sunday school at the First Congregational Church, and participated a great deal in her daughter's Girl Scouting and Rainbow Girls activities. She was an excellent cook, and Bill and Marion enjoyed entertaining their family and friends in their home.
Marion was an avid reader and enjoyed classical music and the arts. Her favorite author was James Mitchner, and she was a great fan of Garrison Keillor. She adored Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy and the operas of Pucinni. She was passionate about wildlife and conservation and was an all around animal lover. In the early 1990s, she helped her daughter open and run a pet store, Critter Kingdom of Milan, Illinois. She also shared her daughter's love of horses and participated in her horse-related activities.
Marion was devoted to family and friends and diligently kept in touch by phone and letter. She was a kind, generous, selfless, and compassionate person, always finding good in everyone she met. To describe her in a word would be "Caregiver". She cared for our wounded marines overseas during WWII and for the sick and infirm back home in the states for many years. She cared for her mother, an aunt, her mother-in-law and her husband. She was loved by all her knew her. Many of her daughter's friends considered her to be their second mother. Many of her own friends found inspiration in her kind words of encouragement. She has left behind a legacy of love and friendship.
Marion is survived by her daughter, Shavaun Kidd, a son-in-law, Rod Spence, and by five cousins, their spouses, and their extended families, Dorothy Arndt Johnston, Robert Arndt and his wife, Betty, John Arndt and his wife, Mary, James Arndt and his wife, Jean, and Phoebe Arndt Millerschone and her husband, Joe. She is also survived by nieces Valerie Kidd Pickel, Nancy Kidd Rice, and Jeannie Kidd Reising.
