Mark Steven Sottos, 72, of Coal Valley, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m., Friday May 5, 2023, at Mary Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 1402 10th Street, Orion, Illinois, with a luncheon following the Mass. Graveside services will be held after the luncheon at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 2301 3rd Street, East Moline at 3 p.m. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday May 4, 2023, at Mary Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3:30 p.m.
Mark was born on May 25, 1950, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Stephen A. and Adelia M. (Burrell) Sottos. He married Jean Seys on August 22, 1970, in Colona, Illinois at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Mark graduated from Orion High School in 1968. He was a Drill Sergeant in the Army Reserve from 1969 until 1975. In 1969, Mark went to work at the Rock Island Arsenal where he worked as a machinist. Mark moved on to work as a Supervisor at John Deere Harvester Works beginning in 1977. He transitioned to a Manufacturing Weld Engineer with the John Deere Seeding Group, retiring in 2009. During his tenure at John Deere, Mark received numerous recognitions. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Mark was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where he was a 5th grade religious education teacher for many years and a member of the Holy Name Society. Mark enjoyed going on long walks, hiking, and woodworking, especially designing and making bird feeders. He adored his family and he loved attending his grandchildren’s activities and large extended family gatherings.
Survivors include his wife, Jean; children, Stephanie (Tim) Moen, Orion, Zachary (Monica) Sottos, Geneseo, Sarah (Peter) Nedved, Coal Valley, Samantha (Christopher) Rivera, Germany; grandchildren, Mark, Lily, and Luke Moen; Alexander, Maximus, Grace, Jaxson, Phoenix and Hendrix Sottos; and Margaret “Maggie”, Augustus “Gus”, John, Leo, and Norah Nedved; brothers, Stephen (Jackie) Sottos, Coal Valley, Andrew (Sandy) Sottos, Orion, Matthew (Joy) Sottos, Coal Valley; sister, Mary (David) Clark, Moline.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Adelia.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Harbor Memory Care Unit at New Perspectives.
