Martha M. "Marti" Berg, 66, of North Aurora passed away Thursday June 27, 2013 at Seasons Hospice and Palliative In-Patient Center, Naperville, IL. She was born April 8, 1947, in Frankfort, KY the daughter of the late James H. and Martha (Coleman) Maddox.
Marti graduated from Sullivan Indiana High School in 1965. She attended Indiana State University graduating in 1968 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and completed her Masters in Elementary Education in 1971. She impacted student learning for 35 years. She spent her first 26 years at Sherrard Elementary in Sherrard, Illinois located close to the Rock Island/Moline Illinois area. Her last 9 years in education were spent at East Aurora Illinois School District 131. After retirement from the elementary classroom in 2005 Marti carried her love of teaching into assisting future teachers at: Olivet Nazarene University, Aurora University and the National Head Start Family Literacy Center.
Community involvement was very important to Marti. In this community work she continued to see education as a forefront for her vision. She was actively engaged by serving as an officer in the following organizations: Child Welfare Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, and P.E.O. She was also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Her talents impacted her church community through her involvement in the Chancel Choir and 10-Fold Contemporary Christian Group. Her commitment to her belief was also found through her work as a Deacon and various committee works.
Marti is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 17 years, Richard K. "Dick" Berg Jr.; her children, Laura (Eric) Kies, of Bettendorf, IA; her son, Tyler (Brooke) Knowles, of Madison, WI, Rick (Audra) Berg of Mattoon, IL, Diane (Brian) Gillaspie of Imperial, MO; She was a loving Grammy to Maddox and Kennon Kies, Carter and Reid Knowles, Jackson and Jillian Berg and Hannah Gillaspie. She is also survived by two special brothers, Jay (Carolyn) Maddox of Indianapolis, IN and Bill Maddox of San Diego, CA. Marti was continually supported by her strong church family, many dear friends and her P.E.O. sisters.
Visitation will be held Monday 4-8 p.m. July 1, 2013 at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Pl. Aurora, IL 60506. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 10:30 a.m. July 2, 2013, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 10 N. Edgelawn Dr. Aurora, IL 60506.
Also, a visitation will be held Tuesday 5-8 p.m. July 2, 2013 at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, 1301 Fourth Street, Orion, IL. Graveside service will be held Wednesday 10:30 a.m. July 3, 2013 at Western Township Cemetery, Orion, IL.
