Martin L. "Marty" Johnson, 83, of Pompano Beach, Florida, formerly of Moline, passed away on 16 January 2007 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 23, 2007 from 1-2 p.m. with a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Private burial in Riverside Cemetery will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Vitas Hospice, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Moline Police Benevolent Association.
Marty was born in Moline on July 30, 1923, to Louise L. and Martin L. Johnson. He was a 1941 graduate of Moline High School and proudly served his country during World War II in Guam and the Philippines. After returning home from the Army he joined his mother as co-owner and manager of the LeClaire Garage in Moline. He continued to manage the business after her death and later retired to Florida.
Marty worked extensively with local law enforcement entities and had a deep respect for the services they provide to our communities. He had special fondness for the men and women of the Moline Police department.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret J. "Peggy" Johnson, Pompano Beach, Florida; daughters Cynthia Jones, Studio City, California, Deborah Schwiebert, Rock Island and Susan Karlix, Davenport; step-daughters Claudia Robinson, East Moline, and Jan Correggio, Boca Raton, Florida; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. His parents and a grandson preceded him in death.
