Martin Jay Lockheart

October 15, 1960 — September 8, 2013

Martin J. Lockheart, 52, of Moline, IL, died Sunday, September 8, 2013, at the Genesis Medical Center East Campus Emergency Room, in Davenport, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am, Friday September 13, 2013, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Avenue, Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm, Thursday, September 12 at the funeral home. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be at National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal where military honors will be provided by Moline American Legion Post #246.

Martin was born October 15, 1960 in Moline, IL, to Terry and Carol J. (Anderson) Lockheart. He grew up in Hampton, IL, attending Hampton Elementary School and graduating from United Township High School in 1978. He had worked as a service writer in the trucking industry, for I-80 TA Service Center (Iowa 80 Truckstop) in Walcott, Iowa since 2001. Prior to his employment at I-80 Service Center, he worked for Oharco Distributing and Lohse Automotive.

Martin served in the United States Army in Ft. Ord, California from 1979 to 1983, training in diesel mechanics, and was fiercely patriotic and proud of his service. He was also very interested in his family's Swedish and Scottish genealogy, though he steadfastly refused to try either lutfisk or haggis, the national dishes of both countries. An avid newspaper and magazine subscriber, his wide-ranging interests included science, cars magazines of all types, World War II history and aviation, Scottish history/travel and world geography, among others. When Martin was interested in a subject, he knew it backwards and forwards. Martin was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and when time allowed, enjoyed attending classic car shows, stock car/Cordova Dragway races, Scottish Highland Games in Davenport, doing crosswords in ink, and listening to 1970s rock.

He recently attended a Lockhart/Lockheart family event and his 35th high school reunion. Those who knew Martin mention his kindness and generosity of spirit, particularly his devoted care for his mother. The two had a standing appointment for breakfast on Mondays after his second-shift job. Others recall the cars he owned and tinkered with in his teens, including an AMC Javelin and Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Survivors include his mother, Carol and sister, Lisa Lockheart, both of East Moline, father Terry (Kathy) Lockheart, Rock Island, and multiple cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Viola Anderson (Silvis), Mary Jane and Lyle Lockheart (Rock Island); an aunt, Pamela Lockheart (Texas), and uncles Jim Lockheart (Florida) and Leslie Anderson (Missouri.)

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities or the American Heart Association. Online condolences may be left for his family at www.esterdahl.com
