Martin A. "Sonny" York, 79, of Coal Valley, IL, passed away surrounded by his family on February 3, 2013, at Trinity Rock Island, IL.
Private family burial will be held at Rose-Lawn Memorial Estate. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight for Korean War Veterans.
Martin was born on November 18, 1933, in Rock Island, IL, the son of Martin A. and Bernice (Garrison) York. He married Janice L. Walker on May 15, 1955, in Milan, IL. She preceded him in death in November of 1986. He later married Cheryl L. (Huys) Grube on January 10, 1997, in Coal Valley. For 34 years, Martin worked as a heat treater for John Deere Harvester, retiring in 1993. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and a member of UAW Local 865 of East Moline. Also, he belonged to the Wake Riders Water Ski Club of Geneseo, the Rock River Ski Team of Moline, and the Quad Cities Rooster Tails of Moline. He loved watching his grandson race the Show Stopper.
