(STUDIO CITY, CA - May 4, 2005) Mary K. Spiegel, Moline, died from natural causes at her home on May 2, 2005. Mary, her two children, seven grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren were preparing to celebrate her 90th birthday on May 17, 2005. Born Mary Kernice Payne on May 17, 1915, in St. Clair County, Illinois, she moved to Rock Island and married Leonard Barenthin in 1933. The couple had two children; Steven, June 7, 1938 and Deanna, January 8, 1941.
In 1943, Leonard was called to serve in World War II on the USS Indianapolis. One year later, at the end of World War II, an enemy submarine attacked and sank the Indianapolis as it was returning to port. Leonard did not survive. Now a widow with two small children to raise, Mary took in laundry to support her family.
At the beginning of 1950, Mary married Carl Spiegel, partner in Spiegel Moving & Storage, and through the years has worked as a nurse's aid and physical therapy assistant. In addition, Mary was a member of the Quad City Chapter of the American Business Women's Association for five years.
Mary has also had the joy of watching her family grow from her two children to seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Steven has four children and eight grand children and Deanna has three children and three grand children.
More.
Spiegel Release/Page 2

One of Mary's 'Pearls of Wisdom' - "You can make 100 friends in 10 minutes, but it takes a lifetime to make a handful of 'true friends'."
