Rock Island

Mary Helen Sullivan, 85, of Rock Island, passed away, August 9, 2024, at Allure of Quad Cities.

Per her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family.

Mary was born on December 17, 1938, in Lindsay, Nebraska, the daughter of Joseph J. and Thecla S. (Kirzeder) Mueck. She married Marvin T. Janes on June 13, 1959. They had 4 children and were divorced in 1977. She married Joseph H. Sullivan on September 11, 1978, in Moline, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 2003.

Mary retired from the Rock Island Arsenal after a distinguished 20 year career. Mary reached the level of GS 15, the equivalent of a civilian colonel, the first woman ever to do so at the Arsenal. In many of her promotions she was the first woman to hold the position. Mary was a voracious lifelong reader and post retirement worked part time at The Davenport Library. Her hobbies included fiber arts, painting, and gardening. She was a lover of trees.

Mary was known as “Mickie” to everyone beyond casual acquaintance. Mary persevered through many hardships in life. By dint of this hard-won experience, her frank but gentle and sage advice was sought by many facing a difficult moment in life. She was beloved and respected in circles far beyond her realization.

Survivors include her children: Thomas Janes, Daniel Janes, Matthew Janes, Marie Janes; 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
