He attended the rural schools of McDonough County, Bardolph High School, and graduated from Western Academy in 1929. He later graduated from Western Illinois State Teachers' College in 1933, majoring in Industrial Arts.
For five years, he worked at Illinois Electric Porcelain Company, Macomb, before going to the Rock Island Arsenal because he could have a better chance of promotion as well as earning more. After "VJ" Day, when the work force at the Arsenal was greatly reduced, he began work at the John Deere Plow Works. He had worked at the Arsenal for five years, and would work at the Plow Works for nine years. Later, after the Plow Works, he worked at the John Deere Planter Works, also in Moline, Illinois, for sixteen years. (He had also worked at the Minneapolis-Moline Company for one year).
When first married, the family lived in an apartment before buying their home at 105-5th Avenue, Moline. Later, in 1967, a home was bought at 3709-44th Street, Rock Island, Illinois. Max has always been interested and active in scout work, being advisor for Post 256, the Explorer Scout group in his church, St. John's Lutheran, Rock Island. He was the advisor of Post 256 for ten years. Max also enjoyed gardening and traveling.
While working for Deere's, Max was a tool-maker, having acquired top-rating. He retired in 1972 because of a critical illness. He had completed almost twenty-six years of work at John Deere's in Moline, Illinois. He had also worked about fourteen months at Minneapolis-Moline Co. as a toolmaker. This company moved back to Minneapolis, so he then went back to Deere's.
