Melvin E. McKay, 78, of Moline, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be 12:00 pm on Monday, June 28, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd. 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 1:00 ??" 4:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Military rites will be conducted by the Willard L.Velie, Jr. VFW Post #2153 in Moline.
Melvin was born January 14, 1926 in Chicago, IL the son of Wilbur and Edna Pohl McKay. He married C. Yvonne Stotler on May 12, 1946 in Davenport.
Melvin was employed as a communication service man for the former Illinois Bell Telephone, now Ameritech, for 36 l/2 years, retiring in 1982. He was a paratrooper serving with the U.S. Army during World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member and former past-president of Moline Aerie #1112 in Moline, a member of the Willard L. Velie, Jr. VFW Post #2153, the Svithoid Club in Moline and the Friends Circle Club of Moline. Melvin also enjoyed the time spent having a good time camping, fishing and bowling with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, 2 daughters and their spouses, Connie and Mike Porter of Stanwood, WA and Darcy and Lennie Neighbours of Moline; 4 sons Richard McKay of Moline, Robert McKay of Stanwood, WA, Steven McKay of Lynnwood, WA and James McKay; 8 grandchildren Kimberly, Erica, Kelly, Robert Jr., Curtis, Steve II, Megan and James, Jr., 5 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and spouse Norman and Jean McKay of Bettendorf, IA, many nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Everett and Dicky and a niece Martha Carlin.
