Merville L. Grimes, 84, of East Moline passed away Tuesday October 23, 2007 at his home.
Visitation is 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. on October 26, 2007 at the National Cemetery, and those wishing to attend should meet at Esterdahl by 12:15p.m. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to the TELCOM Pioneers Talking Books Repair Program.
Merv was born November 16, 1922 in Purdin MO, the son of William and Bertie (Dowell) Grimes. He married Nona R. Martin June 16, 1946 in Rock Island IL. He served in WW II in the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles". He received 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars, an Oak Leaf Cluster, 2 Unit Presidential Citations, Combat Infantry Badge and Parachutist Wings. Merv was one of many who parachuted in the D-Day Invasion. His family was very proud of his service to the United States Military.
Merv worked at Illinois Bell Telephone for 36 years retiring in 1984 as a Senior Assigner. After retiring he volunteered countless hours with the Quad City AT&T Pioneers and is a Life Club Member. Merv could fix just about anything and could tell the best stories and jokes in town.
Merv loved his family very much especially his wife of 61 years, Nona Grimes, his daughter Mary Ann Grimes Shetter (deceased), his sons Bill (Becki) of Moline, and Bruce (Brenda) of Cordova, IL. His grandchildren who adored him are Jason (Darcel) Shetter, Erin Shetter Hicks, Jay Grimes, Jackie Grimes, Ben Grimes, Brody Grimes and a great-granddaughter, Alex Hicks. He is also survived by his son-in-law Steve Shetter and (friend NancyGustafson).
Merv was also preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, John Robert Grimes.
