Michael L. Grchan died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, surrounded by family and friends. He was 61 years old.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 27th from 3-7 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. A Catholic Mass will be Thursday May 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. A burial will be immediately following at Calvary Cemetery. A luncheon will be held afterwards at Croatian Crest Club, Moline. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Mike was born March 20, 1948 in Moline to Steven and Betty (Larson) Grchan. He married Susan Reeves on September 13, 1969 in Silvis, IL. He later married Connie (Bell) Wise on July 3, 1999 in Rock Island at the home of Candy Wise.
Mike graduated from Alleman High School in 1966 and later from Blackhawk College and Western Illinois University with a master's degree in law enforcement and criminal justice administration. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He was also a member of the Quad Cities Chapter 299 Vietnam Veterans of America. Mike was a law enforcement agent for 37 years and served as the Rock Island County Sheriff from 1990-2006. He also taught law enforcement classes at Western Illinois University.
Mike was a member of Blackhawk College Hall of Fame, the F.O. P., the Illinois and National Sheriff's Association, as well as a trustee on the Blackhawk College Board. Mike was also a member of the Easter Seals Club. He enjoyed playing golf, euchre, and cheering for his Chicago Cubs and Bears. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, by whom he will be greatly missed.
