Mildred L. Baker, age 100, a resident of Friendship Manor, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Trinity, Rock Island.
Private services will be held. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Lewistown, IL, First Presbyterian Church of Canton, IL or the First United Presbyterian Church, Moline. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. of Moline, IL, is assisting the family.
Mildred L. Short was born June 10, 1911 in Sterling, IL. She married her husband of 67 years, Dr. Edwin Baker, on April 14, 1938 in Tipton, Ia. He preceded her in death on January 27, 2006.
Mildred graduated from Michael Reese School of Nursing, Chicago, IL. She later became nursing supervisor of pediatrics. She went on to work at Chicago Department of Public Health. Mildred was active in the Presbyterian Churches she attended, teaching Sunday school, serving as a deacon and elder as well as being involved in different church circles. She was a member of the Canton P.E.O. She was a member of the Canton Community Concert Board where she helped organize community concerts. She was also a member of the Altruistic Club, Kings Daughters, I.H.N. and participated with Meals on Wheels. Mildred was active in her bridge clubs in Lewistown and Canton and enjoyed her flower gardens. She loved reading the bible and watching religious television, but above all, she loved her family and wanted to be up to date on what everyone was doing.
