Mildred R Schurr

Mildred R. Schurr, 94, of Sherrard, IL, died Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Amber Ridge Memory Care, Moline, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2016, at Sherrard Community Presbyterian Church, 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street, Sherrard, IL.  Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., 1301 4th Street, Orion.  Burial will be at Sherrard German Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Sherrard Community Presbyterian Church, the Sherrard Volunteer Fire Department, the Sherrard Community Library, or to the Sherrard Food Pantry.

Mildred was born on November 10, 1921, west of Reynolds in Rock Island County, IL, the daughter of Charles Edward and Amy Agnes Mungerson Stropes.  She was the third of four children born to the family.  In 1935, the family moved to Sherrard where she helped out on the family farm and home.  In 1939, she graduated from Sherrard High School.  At this time, she met her future husband.

On August 14, 1943, Mildred married Joseph William Schurr, Sr.  He preceded her in death October 13, 1952.  She worked as a custodian and head cook for the Sherrard Unit 200 grade school for 25 years, retiring in 1986.

For more than 60 years, Mildred was a member of the Sherrard Community Presbyterian Church where she was active with United Presbyterian Women’s Association and a member of Session.   She enjoyed gardening, painting, canning, and cooking.  She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and served as an election judge in Mercer County.  Mildred was proud to call Sherrard her home, always upbeat with words of encouragement, and always ready to step up to volunteer where needed.  She never missed her grandchildren’s activities.  Mildred was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls, and Sherrard Tigers.

Survivors include her son, Joseph (Connie) Schurr, Jr., Sherrard, IL; 6 grandchildren, Dennia (Tom) Bell, Moline, IL, Kelly Gleason, Phenix City, AL, Andrew (Emily) Dochterman, Orion, IL, Brandon (Andrea) Schurr, Milan, IL, Brenton (Ashley) Schurr, Sherrard, IL, and Tyler (Chelsea) Schurr, Orion, IL; great grandchildren, Phillip, Maggie Jo, Anthony, James, Adam, Garrett, Hayden, Kacie, Addyson, Karsyn, Levi and a great grandson expected in October; many nieces and nephews; including nieces, Charleen (Jack) Swisher and Barb (Daryl) Carpenter.

The family would like to send a special thank you to her caregivers, Kristi, Katie, and Ruby as well as to Amber Ridge Memory Care, and Compassus Hospice Care for their wonderful and compassionate care.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; daughter, Mary Jo Schurr Dochterman; brothers, Orville and Marvin; sister, Leona Manuel.
