Mitchell Romanchuk, 90, of Quincy, formerly of Moline, died Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at the Illinois Veteran's Home, Quincy.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, December 17, 2007 at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 1 until 2 p.m. at the Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Anyone wishing to attend the graveside service needs to be at the funeral home by 2 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 246. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established.
Mitchell was born August 26, 1917 in Benton Harbor, Mich., the son of Frank T. and Pauline (Kauzup) Romanchuk. He graduated from Moline High School in 1934.Mitchell (Mick) worked with his parents in the Romanchuk Grocery in Fruitland Addition, Moline, after the war in the late 1940's.
Mitchell was a WWII Army Veteran, serving with the Civilian Conservation Corps from April 18, 1935 to August 16, 1935. Mitchell worked in the office at John Deere Foundry before working construction. He later worked at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. He enjoyed traveling and reading history and health books. He was a rock collector around the United States and enjoyed making jewelry for his family. He loved growing his own fruits and vegetables. He was known for his poppy flowers as he remembered WWII's Flander's fields. He also touched many individual lives through AA where he was a member and volunteer for many years.
Mick will be remembered by his nieces and a nephew. Since he never married and had his own children he mentored his sister's family. They travel and visited regularly. Nine great-nieces and nephews and seven great-great nieces and nephews will remember Uncle Mick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Florence (Robert) Peck; and a brother, Theodore.
