NARRY HAZEL BENSON
Our Mother's journey here on Earth came to a peaceful end at the age of 92 on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at Rennes Health Center in De Pere, WI. She was surrounded by her family and will live forever in our hearts.
Our Mother managed a household with three daughters, yet still found time to be a Brownie leader, Sunday School teacher, and served as founder and president of the Left Bank Art League established in 1956. Mom enjoyed needlepoint and crocheted afghans for each child and grandchild, was an oil painter of landscapes, an avid gardener, collected beautiful china and cut glass from local auctions, were she was quite well known. As a result of her "antiquing", she owned and operated "The Stuga" an antique/ Swedish import shop in Port Byron, IL.
Mom and Dad traveled extensively throughout Scandinavia, Europe and Northern Africa. They spent their retirement summers on Washington Island, Door County, Wisconsin, where they owned a lakeside log cabin and where mom cultivated her love of flowers.
Born May 26, 1913, on a farm near Vienna, IL to Sadie and George Garrett, Mom moved with her family to East Moline in 1917. She graduated from United Township High School in 1932 and married John Eric Benson, December 14, 1935, Eric's parents' 25th wedding anniversary.
Thank you, Mom, for the birthday parties, chili after the football games, the chicks and bunnies at Easter and the brown bag lunches in Butterworth Park. How fortunate we are to have these wonderful memories, of Dad and you holding hands, and your unconditional love and values. This is our legacy from Hazel and Eric Benson that we will pass on to their four grandchildren Darren King, Dallas, TX; Cindy Klein, Temple City, CA; Lisa English, Vernon, NJ and Susan Eckstrom, Greenfield, MA, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.
Our parents were married for 69 years. Our Father died in August of 2004. Mom was preceded in death by her daughter Jo Dell King and her three siblings, Birdena Gellerman, June Sullivan and Jack Garrett. Our Mother is survived by her children, Lynda Cameron, De Pere, WI and Dena Benson- Elek, Novato, CA, three nieces and four nephews.
Funeral services will be 1p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006 at First Lutheran Church, 1230-5th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Moline. Should you attend the funeral, please try to wear something blue, Mom's favorite color. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline is assisting the family.
