Nicholas T. Vassaka

June 26, 1930 — July 17, 2009

Nicholas Vassaka, age 79, of Cedar Rapids, former long time resident of Rock Island, died Friday, July 17, 2009 at Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha, IA.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island. Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline with a Trisagion service at 6:30 p.m. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island with military honors conducted by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to Cure PSP or National Parkinson Foundation.
Nick was born June 26, 1930 in Chicago, IL the son of Thomas and Theodora (Tertipes) Vassaka. He married Mary Demou on July 19, 1959 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church Rock Island.
Nick was employed as a master production and shipping supervisor for Sears Manufacturing Company for 25 years, retiring in 2002. Before that he worked 28 years for Eagle Signal Company. He was a navy veteran of the Korean War serving overseas from 1952 to 1956. Nick was a life long member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church where he was an active member of AHEPA and served on the church board; a member of the American Legion; and supporter of the Junior Achievement program. He enjoyed playing golf and basketball in his younger years, and was an avid sports fan and diehard Chicago Cubs supporter. Nick was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
