Nick Mekus

Nick Mekus, 92, of East Moline died May 9, 2007 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, IL.
Funeral services will be 11a.m. Monday at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave, Moline. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Moline with military honors conducted by East Moline American Legion Post #227. Memorials may be made to the church.
Nick was born March 23, 1915 in East Moline to Demosthenes and Georgia Angelopoulos Mekus. He married Irene Gartelos on June 23, 1946 in Rock Island. She preceded him in death on November 10, 2006.
Nick was employed at the John Deere Foundry in various postions retiring in 1974. He was a WWII Army veteran serving from 1942-1945 with the 833rd Engineering Battalion in England, France, Belgium, Austria and Germany.
Nick was a member of St.George Greek Orthodox Church where he served as a church council member for 14 years. He was a former member of the East Moline American Legion Post #227. Music was a great love of his life. He was a long standing member of the Q.C. Banjoliers. He played guitar, banjo, clarinet, mandolin and bouzouki. He enjoyed carpentry, and extended his services to anyone who needed home improvements. He also enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.
