Orieda Horn Anderson, age 89, of Moline, died Friday, August 5, 2011 at her residence.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3205-60th Street, Moline. Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Calvary Cemetery, Jacksonville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Orieda Anderson Fund to continue her life's work.
Orieda was born November 20, 1921 in Muldrow, Oklahoma to Orien and Eda Garner Horn. She married Edgar Howard Anderson on August 16, 1943 in Pryor, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on April 30, 2005.
Orieda graduated from Arkansas State University in 1942 with a B.S. in Chemistry. She was employed as a chemist, a medical technologist and many years as a Sexuality Consultant for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. Orieda was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Moline.
Orieda will be remembered for her vivacious and spirited personality and great sense of humor. She was a person who loved to make people laugh with her endless jokes yet she was serious about living a purposeful and filled life. She had a great love of life but loved her family most of all. Orieda was the light of our family and a lighthouse to others. She meant so much, not only to us, but to so many that she embraced as her family. She was a loving mother, grandma and great-grandmother; we will miss her.
Orieda was a pioneer who worked tirelessly to change the lives of thousands of people in the area of sexuality, with a focus on the developmentally disabled. She authored 4 books dealing with these sexuality issues.
Survivors include: son John (MaryAnn) Tulsa, OK; daughter Judith (Richard) Franing, Moline; son Ed (Elizabeth) Anderson Concord, IL; special daughter Dorothy Surratt and family of Concord, Il; Grandchildren Joe (Julie); Chris; Jolene (Trevor); Sara ( Hormazd); David; Rebecca (Jason); Jane (Jeremy); Martha (Daniel); Benjamin (Amanda); Samuel; Lily; 8 great grandchildren; brother John of Oklahoma; 2 nieces and 1 nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son Thomas, grandson Michael and two sisters.
