Otto Benjamin Schaab

Otto Benjamin Schaab, age 79, of East Moline formerly of Colona, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at Trinity, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Colona United Methodist Church, 1709 Cleveland Road, Colona, IL. Visitation is Monday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline, IL. Burial is at Rock Island Memorial Park with military services conducted by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to Colona United Methodist Church, Colona Methodist Youth Fellowship Mission Fund or the No Kill Animal Shelter in Milan.

Otto was born November 25, 1933 at the caretaker's house in the Jewish Cemetery, Rock Island, the son of John A. and Mabel M. (Gahagen) Schaab. He married Marilyn J. Russell on October 23, 1953 in Rock Island.

Otto was a carpenter and building contractor for many years, having owned his own business, retiring in 1998. He was a longtime member of the Carpenters Union #166.

Otto was a graduate of Reynolds High School. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army stationed in Baumholder, Germany from 1956 -1957. In his younger years he was a Methodist Youth Fellowship Counselor. Otto was a member of the Colona Zoning Board, the Colona United Methodist Church where he was very active as an usher, trustee and especially enjoyed serving many church dinners. Every morning, he enjoyed coffee at Village Inn with Jerry, Bob, Vito, Dick, Paul, Jim and John. Otto and Marilyn wintered in Florida, and traveled to all 48 contiguous states. He enjoyed nature shows and westerns. Otto especially loved his dog, Pumpkin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rosemary, Bettyjane; brothers, William and Bernard.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Alex Paregis, Dr. Tom Ade and the staff of the 7th floor at Trinity Rock Island for their compassion and care for Otto during his final days.
