Phyllis T. Hands, age 85 of Rock Island died April 11, 2005 at Oak Glen Home in
Coal Valley, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2005 at First Lutheran Church, Moline.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline and also 1 hour prior to the funeral service at First Lutheran Church, 1230-5th Ave., Moline. Graveside services will be held at Springdale Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. in Peoria, IL, following the service. Memorials may be made to Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.
Phyllis was born on May 20, 1919 in Kewanee, Illinois the daughter of Henry and Emelia Pierson Johnson. She married Arthur Swanson on April 7, 1945 in Kewanee. He preceded her in death on June 5, 1963. She later married Hibbard Hands on September 17, 1966 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on October 23, 1999.
Phyllis was employed as a secretary for Caterpillar Americas in Peoria. She was also a sales manager of the South American Division last working in 1966. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Moline and a former member of Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria, where she served as organist, choir member, and the LCW of the church. She helped organize the Young Women's Missionary Society in Peoria. She served as a volunteer of social services of Illinois in the Peoria area. From 1975 to 1989, she helped organize the Minnesota-McGregor Lake Association where she served as secretary/treasurer. She also served as organist/pianist and choir member at Grace Lutheran Church. She sang at various hospitals, nursing homes and fall festivals. Her love of music continued, and she played the piano at the Coventry Apartments and at Oak Glen Home as long as she was able. In later life she participated in the Senior Olympics in the Quad Cities including the Spelling Bee and Writing Contest.
Survivors include her 2 daughters and their spouses Kathryn and Thomas Blade of Moline and Kristie and Wallace Paprocki of New Lenox, IL; 1 son and his spouse Paul and Elizabeth Swanson of Moline; 6 grandchildren - Erik Swanson, Adam Swanson, Robyn Paprocki, Brandon Paprocki, Sarah Blade and Carol Blade.
