Dr. Raymond Stanley Olson, age 79, of Moline, died Friday, July 18, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus.
Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation is from 4:00-6:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Red Cross or First Covenant Church, Moline. Inurnment will be held at Hubbard Cemetery on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
Raymond was born Jan. 13, 1929 in Sandstone, MN the son of Olaf R. and Minnie (Vork) Olson. He married Lois Below on December 20, 1952 in Hubbard, IA
Raymond was a graduate of Ellsworth College, Iowa Falls, IA receiving his Associates of Arts degree; the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree; the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, receiving his Masters of Arts degree; and the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, CO, receiving his PhD in Education.
Raymond started his teaching career at Abbotsford Public Schools, Abbotsford, WI and was an Anatomy and Physiology Professor and served as athletic director for Black Hawk College, working for 30 years until his retirement in 1986, and then teaching part time until 1992. He was a member of First Covenant Church, Moline. Raymond was an U.S. army veteran serving from 1950-53 in Germany with the Criminal Investigation Division, and a member of Moline American Legion Post #246. He was an instructor of safety and first aid, and water safety with the American Red Cross; president of American Association of University Professors, local chapter; and a member of the Plus 60 golf league. Raymond enjoyed camping and had a strong love for his family.
