Raymond Eugene Sunken

Raymond Eugene Sunken passed away May 10, 2021 at UnityPoint Health Trinity Rock Island, IL.

Visitation will be at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, IL from 10-noon on Wed, May 19.  Funeral service will be at noon, and burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.  Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be placed by the river.  Attendees are to wear a face mask and observe social distancing.

Ray was born August 7, 1946 in Rochelle, IL, the son of Sunkie and Anna (Meirath) Sunken.  They moved to Carbon Cliff when Ray was in fourth grade.

Shortly after, he met the love of his life, Sandy Carmichael, in Allaerts’ front yard.  However, they waited until 1967 to get married.  They both graduated from UTHS.  Ray and Sandy were blessed with Christopher and Michelle, and then came grandchildren Erica, Perry & Layne.

Ray managed Sears Automotive for 20 years before taking early retirement.  He then retired from HC Duke at age 63.  Ray was a self-taught man.  There was not anything he couldn’t build, repair, wire or put together.  He kept an immaculate yard, garage (his man cave) and vehicles.  Hobbies included boating, camping, family vacationing, fishing, tinkering in the garage, working in the yard, eating out, and watching Nascar.

Survivors include his wife, children, Christopher (Jennifer) Sunken, Michelle Burnside; grandchildren, Erica (Jared) Sperry, Perry & Layne Burnside; sister, Carletta Dykes; brother-in-law, Bill (Judy) Carmichael; nephews, Jim, Tim, & Toby Dykes & Mike Sunken; and niece, Melinda Symons.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Elsie Carmichael; and brother, Marvin Sunken.

The family would like to thank the staff at ICU for the excellent care, love and support that they showed Ray during his time there.
