Raymond Edward Swanson

Raymond Edward Swanson, 84, passed away peacefully on March
24, 2011 at his home in East Moline surrounded by his family.
Funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 28th, at Wildwood Church in East Moline. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on March 27th, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. in Moline. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #246.
Ray was born on Feb. 11, 1927, in Moline, to George X. and Anna E. Swanson. Ray served his country as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean conflict. Upon discharge, he returned to Woodhull and married Charlene Perry on Aug. 16, 1953. John Deere Plow & Planter Works employed Ray for 36 years. Upon retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Christian Friendliness where he was the food pantry coordinator for 25 years.
Ray was an avid sportsman. While attending Woodhull High School, he played varsity basketball. He enjoyed playing baseball, bowling, golfing, and was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. Ray also enjoyed playing in a couples' card club with friends for many years. He was an active member of Wildwood Church, serving as an usher and greeter. Ray was also a member of the American Legion Post # 246.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Charlene; daughter Rebecca Murphy, son-in-law John Scudiero and children Joseph and Alexandra Murphy, New Jersey; daughter Beth, son-in-law Jared Johnson and children Thomas, Russell, Elliot and Lucia, Davenport, Iowa. His parents and brother Russell predeceased him.
The Swanson family expresses gratitude to the compassionate, caring staff at Rosewood Care Center of Moline and Beacon of Hope Hospice care. Memorials may be made in remembrance of Raymond to Christian Friendliness or Wildwood Church.
