Richard "Dick" F. Laws, age 83, of Quincy, IL, formerly of Moline, died Friday, September 23, 2011 at Illinois Veterans Home, Quincy, IL.
Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 30, 2011 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Burial of cremains will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal with military honors conducted by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to Beverly Farm Foundation, 6301 Humbert Road, Godfrey, IL 62035.
Dick was born June 22, 1928 in Quincy, IL, the son of Leon and Helen Hagen Laws.
Dick graduated from Rock Island High School. He played center on the undefeated 1944 and 1945 football teams. In 1946 he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Japan. He served in the military police and artillery divisions. He also played Football for the US Army's Big Green Team which traveled throughout Japan playing other military teams. He returned to the states and attended St. Ambrose College. He started working at Reynolds Engineering Company in Rock Island as chief tool designer.
He married Elizabeth Kreps on June 10, 1950 in Rock Island, IL. They had two daughters Sue Ellen and Julie Ann.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Moline. In the early 1960's he coached the youth basketball team for the church. Dick was active in the Society of Manufacturer Engineers (S.M.E.) and served as the local chapters' Chairman in the 1970's. In 1979 he purchased The Frank Gaynor Company. He owned and operated the company and worked as a Manufacturer's Representative until his retirement.
Dick loved to play golf. He was a member of Short Hills Country Club for 29 years, where he met and made many lifelong friends and memories. He was also a former member of the board. In 1998 he and his wife Elizabeth moved to Florida. They lived in Bonita Springs and St. Augustine. They moved back to Moline in 2006.
