Richard William Stevenson

Richard W. Stevenson, age 82 of Moline died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at his home.
Funeral service is Friday, March 18, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at the First Covenant Church, Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Private Family burial will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the church. Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. Moline is assisting the family.
Richard was born August 26, 1922 in Moline, the son of Chester A. and Hattie Rhodstrom Stevenson. He married Dorothy Mason on August 20, 1948 in Moline.
Richard attended schools in Ottumwa, IA and graduated from there in 1941. As a young man he was an Eagle Scout as well as a Sea Scout. He moved to Moline and became a member of the First Covenant Church. He started working for John Deere at the Wagon Works in February 1941. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army in the John Deere Battalion. After finishing Basic & Advanced training he was a Technical Sergeant and was transferred to Muskingum College in New Concord, OH. They were part of the Army Specialized Training Corp. The group was studying Mechanical Engineering and had the project finished would have received a BS in Engineering. Instead the program was eliminated due to the "Battle of the Bulge". Richard ended up in Texas as part of a cadre training team. He was later transferred to Aberdeen Proving grounds and then sent to the Philippines. He spent about a year and a half there and was an Acting First Sergeant the whole time there. After receiving his discharge, he returned to the John Deere Wagon Works and was classified as a Buyer. It was changed to the Industrial Division making earth moving equipment in 1962. He retired in June of 1977 after 36 years of service.
Richard enjoyed playing golf, bowling and volunteer work. He was active in the Boy Scouts as a Den Master, Scoutmaster, Explorer advisor, District Commissioner and member of the Eagle Board of Review Panel. He participated as a baseball coach for Lincoln School Dad's Club. In 1971 he joined the local SCORE chapter and held various positions in that chapter. Richard was also a member of American Legion Post # 246.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister Bernadine McMinn and a grandson, Heath Hickman.
