Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2008 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave. Moline. Memorials may be made to the Moline Evangelical Church or to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House where "Dick" spent the last weeks of his life in their loving care.
Dick died on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The Veterans Hospital in Iowa City was his treatment center for more than six years and is to be commended for all their care and concern for Dick. Though his real home was the "high country" of Wyoming, he lived here in the Quad Cities during his years of cancer treatment-sometimes living with family members and spending his last years as a resident of Colona House where he quickly became known and loved by others who live there.
Dick was born April 17, 1942, in Moline, the son of Joseph and Ruth Sullivan. Following his graduation from high school in Escanaba, MI he served in the National Guard. In 1961 Dick married his high school sweetheart, Linda Olson. Following his service to our country, he pursued many dreams, learning many trades, being self employed for most of his life. He was a skilled carpenter, a truck driver, and construction contractor. He also worked as a painter with his twin brother Bob and brother Mack.
Dick was a great story-teller and kept even the hospital staff at the VA hospital and the staff at the hospice house entertained with his tales and jokes. Hunting and fishing were a large part of his life. Many of his stories were based on his love of the outdoor life. He also spent many hours of his final years playing cribbage with his brother-in-law, Grant and any other player who knew the game.
Survivors include his mother, Ruth Sullivan and step-father, Thomas Richard Sullivan of Moline; daughters, Lori Lancaster and her husband, Ray of Utah, Lisa Luthi and her husband Mark of Wyoming, son, Todd and his wife Karen of Nevada, grandchildren Valerie, Jessica, Mallory, Dustin, Mindy and Tylor; and two great grandchildren. Other survivors include brother, Mack Sullivan (Sandy), Moline; sisters Sandra Atherton (Bob), Rock Island, Kathy Andersen (Grant), Moline, Deborah Mayer (Brian), Gresham, OR, and Pamela Morter (Kevin), Naples, FL, step-brothers Mike Sullivan and Tim Sullivan of Texas, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda, his father, his twin brother, Bob and an infant sister.
