Roy J. Gustafson, age 83, of Moline died Monday, February 13, 2006 at Parkview Healthcare Center in East Moline.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2006 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial is in National Cemetery, Rock Island with military honors conducted by American Legion Post # 246. Memorials may be made to the Moline American Legion Post # 246.
Roy was born to Axel and Selma Gustafson on May 26, 1922 in Davenport. He married Barbara Preston on June 25, 1949 in Moline.
Roy served in the US Army during World War II, both in Europe and the Pacific Theater from 1943-45. Roy was an honorary lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 246. He was well known for the many years he played Taps at the Arsenal Cemetery for others in the military. In the 1950's he was a member of the " Kewanee Black Knights Drum & Bugle Corps. " Roy was also known for his smooth trumpet in a band known as The Velva Tones, a band he started and played with for over 30 years. After World War II, Roy worked in sales at Electro Coatings Co. in Moline and then worked at John Deere Plow Planter Works beginning in 1965, retiring in 1983. Roy loved his family and enjoyed the Chicago Bears and Cubs.
Those left to honor his menory are his loving wife, Barbara, his sons and spouses: Pastor Stan & Sue Gustafson, Jeff & Tami Gustafson, and Barry Gustafson. He has 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Viola (Vi) Hillan.
