Russ was born on October 19, 1923 in Claremont, MN. the son of Walter and Alice Newton Sellers.
He married Eunice Bushert on October 31, 1952 in Rock Island.
Russ served in the Army in World War II from 1942-1945. He worked in the motor pool as an all around utility mechanic working on everything from trucks and jeeps to the complicated laundry vehicles.
Russ worked for 32 years at Alcoa from 1951-1983. He hired on at Alcoa in 1951 in the transportation department driving trucks and running overhead cranes through out the plant. He later joined the maintenance division and ran the overhead cranes to assist the millrights in machinery maintenance.
Russ had a thirst for knowledge and life. He was accomplished in a wide variety of activities and believed in doing everything to the very best of his ability. He was just as comfortable talking with dealers about his extensive collection of antiques as he was cruising on the Rock River in his boat, while running his lines. He could talk with musicians about the history of music and showcase his extensive collection of recordings, and then get on a dirt bike and jump some hills to complete the day. He loved the outdoors and using his hands and spent spare time remodeling a house on the Rock River. He was able to ride horses and then make his yard and garden the showcase of the neighborhood. He enjoyed helping others in need both through his own time and certainly by giving his opinion.
Russ was always up for an intellectual exchange and was noted for his indepth debates with whomever would take the challenge.
After his retirement, he became an avid photographer and joined the Color Shooters Camera Club. He quickly became one of the more accomplished members, rapidly elevating himself through the ranks, winning countless awards for his slides and pictures. During this time he also became well known throughout the Midwest for his 3-D photography and became a judge for other camera clubs.
Russ also became well known for his ballroom dancing in the area and visited many different dance halls with his friend and dance partner Phyllis Allen. He liked to be the center of attention and considered himself an "entertainment technician" by using his quick wit, gift of gab and sense of humor. He literally waltzed through life with his tongue planted firmly in cheek.
