Ruth E. Carlson

Ruth E. Carlson, age 92, formerly of Moline, died Friday, March 9, 2007 at Silver Cross Health & Rehabilitation Pavilion, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church,Moline. Visitation is one hour prior at the church. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. Moline is assisting the family.
Ruth E. Carlson was born February 10, 1915 in Moline, the daughter of Henry G. and Iduna(Cowden) Carlson. She graduated from Moline High School in 1932. She received her bachelor's degree from Augustana College in 1936 and her master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1945. She did additional graduate work at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern University,University of Colorado and Iowa State University She also attended National Science Foundation Summer Institute at University of Wyoming, University of California-Berkeley and George Peabody College for Teachers.
She was employed by Moline School District 40 for forty years first at Irving School 1937-1943 and John Deere Junior High School Science Department, 1943-1977. She taught Human Anatomy at Moline Community College and Physiology classes at Moline Public School of Nursing 1949-1959. She retired in 1977 as head of the science department at John Deere Junior High School.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, where she formerly taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir, and was presently a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church Women and Trinity Seniors. She was also a Life member of National Education Association, Illinois Retired Teachers Association and American Association of University Women. She was a member of Blackhawk Unit of Illinois Retired Teachers nd National Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of Pi Lambda Theta, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Moline Education Association, National Association of Biology Teachers and National Science Teachers Association. She traveled in most of the United States, Canada,Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Orient.
She is survived by a sister, June Purse of Moline, nieces and nephews Dawn and Frank Coyle, Rock Island, Brad and Mary Beth Purse, Downers Grove, Greg and Laura Purse, Elk Grove Village, Todd and Diane Purse, Eagle, Colorado, Jane and Matt Wiedenhoeft, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, David and Diane Carlson, Grays Lake, Ingrid Carlson and Norman Ohama, Chicago, Timothy and Leslie Carlson, Marion, Iowa, seven great nephews and five great nieces, and one great great nephew, and one great great niece.
