Ruth C. Peterson, 103, of Lake Forest, IL, a former 60-year resident of Moline, died July 31, 2009 at Westmoreland Nursing Center, Lake Forest, IL.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, Moline. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made in Ruth's name to the Black Hawk College Foundation, where the family plans to establish a scholarship.
Ruth was born March 7, 1906 in Sharpsburg, Iowa, to John F. and Amanda (Blad) Christianson. Like her mother and two sisters before her, Ruth became a primary school teacher. After attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, she taught for thirteen years in various school districts in Iowa, including Bedford, Elkport, Perry, and Davenport.
Ruth married Warren Peterson of Moline on June 22, 1940, in Conway, IA. They made their home in Moline, where they raised their two daughters, Adena and Edith. Ruth was an active member of the Kings Daughters, William Carr PTA, the Moline Women's Club and other community organizations. Ruth and her husband were longtime members of Calvary Lutheran Church.
In 1953 Ruth returned to teaching, accepting a position as kindergarten teacher at Benjamin Franklin School in Moline. During that time, she also took classes at Augustana College and earned her Bachelor's Degree. Ruth worked at Franklin until her retirement in 1971, teaching generations of children to love school. More than 30 years later, on the occasion of her 100th birthday, Mrs. Peterson was touched when hundreds of her former pupils and their parents shared their treasured memories of their kindergarten days through birthday cards and letters, photos, and even copies of their report cards.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Warren in 1993 and by her sisters, Edith Cade and Adena Kinser. Ruth continued to live in Moline until January 2000, when she moved to Lake Forest.
