Shirley L. Anderson, 90 formerly of Moline died December 20, 2005 at Forest Hill, East Moline.
Funeral services will be 11a.m. Friday, December 23, 2005 at Elim Covenant Church, Moline. Visitation will be Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Christian Friendliness or to the church.
Shirley was born February 9, 1915 in Moline to David Carl and Hannah (Grear) Engholm. She married Donald G. Anderson on January 30, 1937 in Macomb, IL. He preceded her in death on February 25, 1966.
Prior to raising her family, Shirley was a secretary for Attorney Bell in Moline. She was also an inspector for Strombeck/Becker. After raising her family she worked for the Millard Cleaning Service where she cleaned offices at John Deere and Modern Woodman. She was the supervisor of her cleaning team at Modern Woodman. Shirley retired at the age of 72.
Shirley was very active in her community and church. She was a vital member of Elim Covenant Church, Moline where she was a charter member and attended faithfully. She taught Sunday school for over 65 years. She also was incharge of the Cradle Roll at her church where she knitted bonnets for newborns and helped set up missions for her church. She made sure every Sunday that there were flowers on the altar.
During WWII she tore and made bandages and dressings and knitted vests for WWII soldiers for the Red Cross. She was also an involved member of Christian Friendliness, a volunteer for the Salvation Army Food Pantry, Moline FOE Auxiliary, and was an election judge for 50 years for Rock Island County. In 1979 She received the "The Active Eight" Award from WQAD-TV for giving unselfishly to her friends, neighbors and community.
Shirley enjoyed world travelling. She had traveled to every state in the United States. She spent the winter months in San Francisco with her daughter Sylvia. Shirley was an excellent seamstress and knitter. She enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble with her twin sisters. She also liked to put together jigsaw puzzles.
She liked to read the funnies and cut them out to share with others. Her favorite funnies were "Sally Forth" and "Peanuts". She liked to visit her favorite store weekly, Walgreens, in East Moline to develop pictures.
Shirley's favorite saying was "this too shall pass."
