Shirley was born on April 17, 1924, in Aurora, IL, the daughter of Oscar and Amy Bales Grubaugh and step father, Harold Larson. She married William England on March 18, 1943, in Port Orchard, WA, and he preceded her in death on July 5, 1954. She later married Donald K. Mitchell on May 4, 1957, and he preceded her in death on March 22, 1999.
Shirley was a member of Cornerstone Christian Fellowship. She devoted her life to making a home for her family. In her later years, she was less able to get out and about frequently, but maintained excellent driving skills to the very end. Shirley was as sharp as a tack, and enjoyed sharing a laugh with friends and family. She was particularly proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, remembering every birthday with at least a card and more as she was able.
Shirley was a wonderful cook and excelled in baking. Her pies were a particular source of pride for her husband, Don, who would occasionally smugly carry one into work where it would be quickly devoured. Her love of baking has inspired others to carry on the tradition in the family, but her angel food cakes, pumpkin squares, caramels, and cookies remain unmatched.
Shirley was a consistent source of comfort and prayers for her loved ones, always ready with a listening ear when needed.
She was a woman of great faith and a beautiful person who will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends.
Survivors include her daughters, Janice McClain (Michael) Platteville, WI, and Kathleen (Daniel) Defenbaugh, Poulsbo, WA; 8 grandchildren, William England, Brian England, Amy England-Thompson, Tammy Hampton, Randall McClain, Jennifer McClain, Brett Defenbaugh, and Tricia Benson; 16 great grandchildren; brother, Robert Grubaugh.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, William and Donald; son, Allen England; grandson, William Lowns; brother, Harold Larson.
