Shirley Smith

December 26, 1944 — August 1, 2013

Shirley Marie (Skanse) Smith, of Moline, Illinois, died and passed into eternal life on August 1, 2013, at home. She fought a sustained battle against cancer for eleven years. The cancer took her life but it could not dampen her spirits or take her soul. She is now with her Savior, Jesus Christ, cancer-free, whole, happy and beautiful.

Shirley loved Jesus Christ with all her heart. He was her friend and confidant and trusted leader, and she felt privileged to serve in His church, leading women's Bible studies, singing songs with children, and welcoming and encouraging those who came.

Her husband, Karl, of 43 years shared her faith in God and loved her faithfully and singularly. They had many adventures together in the name of following Jesus. Karl is a pastor and led international congregations in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala City, Guatemala, and New Delhi, India. Shirley enjoyed keeping in contact with many people from their former churches and felt fortunate to have friends all over the world.

She was cherished and is survived by:
Her husband, Karl Smith.
Her daughter, Sharon Steen, with her husband, Jamie, and children, William, Theodore, and Katharine.
Her daughter, Kathee Terwilleger, with her husband, Isaac, and children, Gideon, Hope, and Esther.
Her sister, Bonnie Willis, with her husband, Jon, and son, Jay.
Karl's siblings: Roberta Woodberry and her husband, Dudley, with their three children and families; Bob Smith and his wife, Phyllis, with their two children and families; Mark Smith and his wife, Myra, with their two children; and Wibby Swedberg and her husband, Fred, with their three children and families.
Many other family and friends.
Shirley's memorial service will be held Friday, August 9, 2013, at 3:00 pm at First United Presbyterian Church, 801 Sixteenth Street, Moline, IL.
