Thomas Wisner Byrnes, 87, of East Moline & formerly of Davenport, IA, passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church, East Moline. Visitation is from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island with military honors conducted by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to Lungevity Foundation 435 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 310, Chicago, IL. 60654.
Tom was born August 10, 1921 in Davenport, IA, the only son of Donn and Grace Byrnes. Tom was a graduate of Davenport High School and the University of Iowa, earning his B.A. degree in Journalism.
After graduation, he worked in life insurance in Des Moines, later moving his family to St. Petersburg, FL where he worked as a commercial photographer. Upon returning to Davenport, Tom and his family ran Byrnes Building Service in East Davenport. Tom also worked as a sales manager for Chicago Paper Co. and in advertising at Sperry Boom.
Tom was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps
Tom was active in Playcrafters in Moline for many years and starred in local TV commercials in the 1980's as "Captain Matt". He was an avid gourmet cook, bridge player and a wonderful story teller in the Irish tradition.
Tom is survived by his wife of 26 years, Carolyn McClure Byrnes, four daughters from his first marriage to Evelyn Smith Byrnes; Sharon Schneider of Mahwah, NJ, Nancy Byrnes of Raleigh, NC, Barbara Byrnes of Atlanta, GA, and Linda Accetta of Cleveland, OH. He was the proud grandfather of Bryan Schneider, of Brooklyn, NY, Katy & Mark Accetta of Cleveland, OH, and great-grandfather to Finnegan Schneider of Brooklyn. Tom is also survived by Dave and Tim Kolovat, stepsons from Tom's marriage to Zoe Kolovat, and Carolyn's 3 sons, Tom, Steve, & Mike McClure & families.
Tom loved the Quad-Cities and especially life on the Mississippi River as owner of several cruisers, one of which he built himself. For many years he shared his love of the river with his wife, family & friends.
