Velma Ruth DeBates, 99, of Geneseo, IL, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society, Geneseo, IL.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, Avenue of the Cities, Moline.

Velma was born on April 28, 1914, in Ophiem, IL, the daughter of George and Ruth (Riley) Peterson. She graduated from Alpha High School, Class of 1931, and was most recently the last surviving member of her class. Velma attended Rock Island Business College. She previously worked at Oslund - Fegelin Letter Service in Moline.

Velma married Albert Louis DeBates on February 28, 1942, at her parent's home in Ophiem. He preceded her in death on November 15, 1996. Velma was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church where for 25 years she played the piano for Sunday school. She loved God and her church. Velma liked to bake, work crossword puzzles, play her organ, and collect dolls. She was a real people person and cherished her precious family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Eugene and Glenn.

Velma's daughter, Karen, would like to thank the staff at Hospice Compassus for their outstanding care given to her mother the last weeks of her life ... you made mother's journey HOME a little easier. I love and miss you mom.
