Virgil was born November 20, 1915 in Rock Island County, a son of Carl who emigrated from Sweden, and Birdie Lindgren. He married Ann Harriet Chase on April 16, 1941. His first date with Ann followed on the heels of his invitation for her to join him on a small airplane ride at the Moline airport. After their marriage, Virgil and Ann lived in Peoria where Virgil was a top salesman for Country Companies Insurance Company and later relocated to Cambridge. In 1946 Virgil and family moved to Orion where he farmed until 1976.

Virgil was a loving father and husband as well as an avid bowler, and Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. Virgil was a fine athlete, and in high school, he excelled as a basketball player. A lifelong sports fan, he managed boys and girls baseball teams, organized community basketball teams, set up basketball tournaments and organized bus trips to attend Chicago Cubs baseball games. His passion for music included playing the violin and singing in the church choir. He also enjoyed dancing and playing cards.

In 1960, Virgil teamed up with his cousin Andy Lindgren, and Paul Briggs to build Meadow Lanes bowling alley and restaurant. Their objective was to provide families with affordable entertainment in Orion. Virgil managed Meadow Lanes until 1999, when he decided to retire. He and Ann then enjoyed many winters, and Cubs spring training games in Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; son David of Evanston, Illinois; daughters and sons-in-law Suzanne and Mike Gibbs of Racine, Wisconsin, and Beverley and Ronald Foley of Orion; grandchildren Leslie (Mike) Kezmoh, Folsom, California; Peter (Jessica) Lindgren, Salt Lake City, Utah; Lindsey (Mark) Pasmore, Grayslake, Illinois; Tim (Jen) Foley, Davenport, Iowa; Chris (Erika) Gibbs, Portland, Oregon; and Erika (Kyle) Martin, Arroyo Grande, California; and ten great- grandchildren; sister, Geneva Thor, Moline; and several nieces and nephews.
