Wife of Former Moline Mayor Dies

Vivian E. Smith, 95, died Sunday, July 24th, 2016 in St. Charles, Illinois. Vivian (nee Lindberg) was born June 26, 1921 in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur and Minnie Erickson Lindberg. She married Arnold R. Smith on April 19th, 1941 in Columbia, Tennessee. Mr. Smith owned and operated the Arnold R. Smith Insurance Agency for many years and was the Mayor of Moline from 1957 to 1961.

Vivian was a member of Elim Covenant Church for over 60 years, where she held various offices and was a 50+ year chair member. Vivian dearly loved her church and was active in its activities.

Vivian worked at the Buddy L. Company in East Moline, John Deere Planter Works, the Moline Board of Education, Sears and Roebuck and held a real estate license with the Arnold R. Smith Insurance Agency.

Vivian enjoyed doing crafts, watching NBA basketball on TV, and cheering on the Chicago Cubs.

A special occasion for Vivian was being introduced to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of Great Britain at a reception in the Queen=s honor in Chicago in 1959; the occasion being the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Survivors include a son, Paul (Janet) Smith of Manhattan, Kansas; daughter Ann Smith-Stiner of Naperville, Illinois; five grandchildren: Amy Stiner, Amber (Matt) Zerby, Angela Stiner, Amanda (Paul) Tarnow, and Paul W. Smith; as well as five great-grandchildren: Caden and Tage Zerby, Cash and Law Tarnow, and Grant Stiner.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three brothers: Harold Lindberg, Paul Lindberg, and Robert Lindberg.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 1st, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at Elim Covenant Church, 5201 18th Avenue, Moline, IL, with service to follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, Rock Island, Illinois. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.
